By Zee 'C' Author of the beloved Scruffy series
Scruffy is and lonely in the rescue centre until Sam comes along and chooses him despite his clumsy ways to be his forever dog. They have lots of fun and adventures during the course of the book. Most of it was written from my memories of growing up on a farm at Stape near Pickering with a bit of creative licence.
They actually go camping, which although not actually named, in Newton Dale and those familiar with the North York Moors Railway will recognise my description of the station at Levisham where I used to be a volunteer. Pickering Castle and the walk from Goathland to Grosmont is also featured.
They visit the seaside but this is more of a mixture of places using my imagination rather than an exact location but is around the Whitby area. In future books, Scruffy and Sam visit their Uncle and Grandad's farm which will be situated around the Castleton area as I used to regularly drive from Hutton le Hole to Guisborough and feel the edge of the village I passed through would make the ideal setting for the farm that Sam's Mum grew up on.
The farm where Sam and Scruffy is situated in the Ripon area around a place called Sutton Howgrave where I was christened although we left the area when I was only 7 months old. When I first described the place my Mum asked me how I could describe it so accurately and I said I did not know I thought it was my imagination but to my surprise, she said, 'NO it is exactly what the cottage and garden was like that we lived in. ' I was conceived and born there but as we left when I was only 7 months and we have no photographs of the place I am unsure exactly how I was able to incorporate it into my writing.
